Default Company Range Day yesterday

A couple of times a year I set up a day at the range for anyone in my company who wants to attend. They are invited to bring family, friends, clients or anyone else that they think will enjoy it.

Last spring I had 32 people attend, and at least half of them had never touched a gun before that. A later shooting day had about 20, but it was short notice and in the middle of summer (Over 110f).

Yesterday, I think we had 38 attend, out of 42 who had RSVP'd. I'll work up a final head count later today. Weather was perfect, but the range was really crowded and very loud. About half of those who came out yesterday had never been before. Our very own Jo Da Plumbr came out for several hours. Thanks, Jo! And my shooting partner/teaching partner came out as well, to help in any way he could with all of the new shooters. Thanks!

We shot on the steel target handgun range from 8am to almost 3pm, then the intrepid came down and shot some Skeet. We ended up with a squad of about 12 people on Skeet. WAY too many, but everyone had fun.

I brought along a LOT of ammo, including 2,000rds of .22lr. Everyone was buying also ammo at the range like it was going out of style, and pretty much all of it was shot up.

My 11 year old daughter was shooting an M&P22 for the first time (her rifle is a single shot Marlin), and loving it. After her first shot, I told her I'd load 10 rds in the mag, and she smiled and said said "make it 20", so I loaded the full 25. She shot that up and told me to "load 50" in the next one. Ha. So I told her that when she starts voting, to always remember that she wanted 50 rds in her rifle, and that anyone who wants to restrict that should never be voted for.

So, a huge THANK YOU to the administrators and staff at Oak Tree Gun Club for giving us the space to enjoy a day of bonding on the range. For those of you in the Los Angeles area, give Oak Tree a try. Fully stocked pro shops, gun stores, a very good restaurant, courteous staff and world class facilities.

More pics to follow.

A couple more...

My shooting partner is a very active competition shooter. He shoots IPSC, IDPA, 3 gun, and Police Matches every weekend. He ordered an SAI 1911 a few years ago, but has been very unhappy with it. The holes seem to be slightly out of spec, because it breaks pins and safeties regularly. It also has other quirks. This is a pic of an "ejected" case that flipped around and was hammered back into the chamber, backwards. He also had a couple of other malfunctions that locked the gun up tight and required disassembly to clear. I had a bunch of my 1911s on the line at the same time, and they all worked great. Ha. A couple of them did run dry and seize up, but my trusty can of Fluid Film did the trick and got them back in the game (though grease should be used on 1911s, the FF was handy).

My Gold Cup has a Kart Barrel, and did not work very well with the high quality remanufactured ammo from the range, though it was 100% with my factory ammo. My other 1911s had no problems with the range ammo.

I fired the Ace conversion on my Series 70 for the first time, and it was 100% reliable. Shooting high, so I'll have Jim Hoag put a higher front sight on it. It was LOTS of fun, and the floating chamber gave it some noticeable recoil which was cool. I tried it with 8 mags, and they were all GTG.

I also tested my recently refinished S&W Mod10-7, and it shot great.

Now, the only problem is that I have 40 filthy guns to clean. Knocked out 3 last night when I got home, but that leaves 37 more to go. Ha.

Thanks, Don. I have managed to convert several foaming at the mouth Anti-Gunners. One is a co-worker whose dad is a successful screenwriter. They are from England, and I talked her into coming out last year and bringing her dad. They LOVED it and admitted to having their minds changed about guns. Yesterday, her sister and dad came and had a blast.

My daughter rocks, Thanks! Even managed to get my wife to the range for a few minutes yesterday. She only fired about 40rds, but had fun, and wants to go again without such a large group.

Looks like it was all worth it. Nice range, nice people, nice scenery, and best of all, a family thing too. Thanks for sharing

It did take almost 2 years of discussion with daughter #1 to get them to come out. But yesterday, dad brought along daughter #2. It is all baby steps.
