How much time does it take for say a 30-06 to travel 300 yards . I'm trying to estimate how much to lead a target that is moving at speed. I know how to figure how far a target moves in a fraction of a second but don't know how to figure in the speed of the bullet or how much the target can move in the time it takes the bullet to get there. Thank you

Take feet per second and convert it to yards per second and go from there based on rifle and round.

It takes a 30-06 about .35 seconds to travel 250 m (about 300 yrds.)

Thank you Georgia hunter that's what I Was looking for. Is there a formula so I can apply it to different distances and calibers if I know velocity of bullet. Thanks for your help

Minty- welcome to the forum. When you get a minute, stop by the intro thread, and say howdy.

Lead is going to be influenced by several things- flight time of the bullet, relative motion of a moving target (moving at 90 degrees, 45 degrees, etc), speed of movement, and one of the MOST important- wind.

FWIW, a deer moving at a right angle to you moving at a slow walk, shot will offset about 6 inches. Quartering towards or away, about half that. But a 10 mph wind, typical 30-06, will move over 6 inches- IF that wind is at a right angle to bullet path.

Awhile back,I was fortunate enough to have a chance to try a running deer target. The distance we were told was 90 yards. The 06 and the .270 were good if one held under the deer's nose and kept the rifle moving . Trying the .357 and the .44 the same lead put the hits in the back hams. Holding about 3 ft in front brought us back were we wanted to be. I guess 12-1300 fps takes a little longer than 27-2900 fps to get downrange.

You're wrong. That's 274 yards.

300 yards is approximately 276 meters

Average speed of a 30-06 is 2700 fps divide that by 3 and you got 900yards a second divide one second by 1/3 and pick the closest number that you can multiply by 3 and get closest to a second...in this case its about.333 seconds ........but you'll find that the 3 repeats .
