Default 1911 9mm Rock Island Armory - Range Report

Just bought a RIA 1911 Tactical in 9mm. $480 at the local gun shop. Upgrades are plain tactical sights in dovetail mounts, lowered flared ejection port, beaver tail grip safety with bump, elongated hammer, ambi-safety, slotted trigger, full length guide rod.

I shot 50+ rounds of each, using the single factory supplied 9 round magazine and a Springfield magazine . No feeding, extracting, firing, or other problems.
-Sellier Beloit 115gr FMJ
-Winchester bulk white box 115gr FMJ
-Blazer Brass 115gr FMJ

All three loads were accurate and when I did my part, groups were very tight at 7 yards. The sights shoot to where I point them. The sights are plain black and all my other pistols are three dot, so I need to do something about that. The safety is easy to flip on and off. I forgot to watch any brass extract, but it all seemed to land a foot or two to the right and slightly behind me.

The trigger has some slack on take-up, but it is smooth after that, and releases crisply with no over travel. The trigger feel, once you take up the slack, is similar to my .45 Kimber and .45 Springfield Loaded. The slide and barrel are very well fitted to the frame, the same tightness as the Kimber and Springer. The grip safety is a little sloppy in the frame opening, but it works correctly. All the machining is nicely done with no burrs or rough cutting tool marks. The gun came with smooth grips. I removed them and installed some inexpensive gun show checkered grips that are not as bright and shiny.

The slide is marked Rock Island Armory in 1/8" letters and has their crested design but the lettering is subtle so it is not objectionable. I hate guns with a stupid name or huge lettering boldly engraved on the slide. The Parkerizing seems a bit thin compared to my GI Springer, we shall see if it holds up. Someday I might have one of those specialty coatings applied.

I like the checkered grips MUCH better. What is the magazine capacity?

I did some shopping and found that almost all 9mm 1911 mags are 9 rounds capacity. I ordered a few MecGar mags for the RIA, they work well in my other guns.
