Yesterday I was shooting and had to stop for a half hour with a range delay. So look at center of photo, then half way to the right, that is a 16"x20" steel target at 1175 yds. We were shooting suppressed weapons and they just walked in.

Back in the 60s, had an ALBINO deer run into the impact area on an M14 field fire range, at about 200 meters. 60 shooters on line. 10 round magazine. Deer ran from the left range limit stake to the right stake, and kept going.

Oh, my goodness, yes- they heard about THAT all the way back to the barracks!

Range delays are not uncommon at Camp Perry during the National (rifle) Matches. The usual reason is a pleasure craft that wanders into the danger zone clearly marked and charted in Lake Erie. One year that I shot the John Garand Match, while I was pulling targets a swan flew down behind the berm on the 1000 yd. range, all the way from the first target frame on the right past the last on the left—during rapid fire!

I don't see the problem, that just lunch and target practice all in one day.

I would think most ranges wouldn't want to needlessly provoke the enviro types. So open ranges tend to have warnings about shooting stray wildlife. I understand.

Did the herd just up and leave? Or were they hazed out?

I saw movement in the upper part of my rifle scope and thought maybe a coyote because all I got was a head coming around the ridge it was a small dark movement. The spotter said no it's not a coyote and I should probably unload for a moment. This is a normal calving location on private property so we were done for the day. At one point there was an elk 5 feet from the target, thats when I jumped up and and ran for the camera, but when I got back he had moved. I have shot this range a few times and this target has at least four different winds that mess with the bullet. It was just an interesting feeling to bang on a 1175 yard target for 45 minutes and get the dope on the rifle perfect and then have 40 elk walk up and surround the target. It was like we were ringing a dinner bell.

I am sure you are joking. The owners of this property are friends and it is really nice they let us shoot there. Those elk will be there for the next two months. I know there are a lot of coyotes there, the owners have talked of coyotes coming down at night and barking at the house. I don't see a reason to make the elk upset this time of year.
