Went to the local sportsmans store today to price some scopes, and the salesman just about had me sold on a Vortex scope, 3.5-10x44, for under 150 bucks. However, I have never heard of this brand in the past, and wondered if anyone here had tried them, or at least heard anything about them.
Vortex - Vortex Crossfire 3.5-10x44 Riflescope
Here's the link to the one I was looking at, and I was really impressed by it. Hope you all have some useful insight, thanks in advance. |

Never heard of them, but i reckon you should spend at least 50% of the cost of your rifle on the glass...guess it depends how much your rifle cost?
IMHO with optics you generally get what you pay for. |

After some extensive shopping, I had all but decided on a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40, but then the fancy talking salesman added more equation to my decision. Also, the gun was a gift, so 50% of zero? JK, I was looking in the 150-180 range for a scope. |

If you're still planning on hunting elk at fairly close range in dense woods (as your previous post) personally my priority would be for the brightest image possible, magnification is less important - seems the lower magnification Nikon scopes are bit less expensive...If I'm honest my 2-7 X scope rarely moves off 3 X when deer hunting in the woods. Field of view wins with a moving target in dense cover.
I'd stick with the Nikon - plus if you ever decide to trade it'll hold it's value better than a make no-one's heard of. |

The Pro-Staff is an excellent scope for the price. I have one on my 10-22. __________________ Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) - a system of government where those least capable of leadership are elected by those least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to succeed or provide for themselves are rewarded with goods and services paid for by wealth confiscated from a diminishing number of people who actually work and produce.

Thanks for the input there! You've convinced me to stick with the known name, I'll be buying the Nikon Prostaff once my scope fund builds up a bit more! |

I've read some good things about the Vortex scopes. Looked through a few at shows and they impressed me. My next scope is going to be one of the Vortex Vipers. Friend of mine went through 3 Nikon Pro Staff scopes before he got one that held zero. It was on a .204 Ruger. |

I have talked to a few guys that use them. They all are very satisfied with performance of the optics and a few have their bino's as well. |

I have a Nikon Buckmasters 4-12x 50mm on a H&R Handi-Rifle in 45.70.
It has been fired numerous times and has no problem holding zero. |
