Target optic for $500 or less

I recently purchased a Ruger American rifle in 308, my first in this caliber. I am looking to put a great scope on it. Currently, I only shoot targets and enjoy seeing how far I can reach out and touch the targets.
I prefer high power, as my vision isn't 20/20 by any stretch. Large magnification is a must, (4x16 and so on).
I understand and appreciate the history of optics and don't need a lesson on that aspect. I am more I am looking for your preference or opinion on optics in this range. Thanks!!!

and so on)

I've got a nice Weaver V16 Classic on a Weatherby 243 I really like. It's 4-16x42 w/AO and "fine crosshair". Bought a few yrs back and was around $300.
Another is the Vortex PST. 6.5-20x50 I believe w/Side focus. For around $500
Sightron II or III in many magnifications for around the $500 and less.
Nikon Monarch 6-18x? w/SF for around $400
There's also the Weaver Target Model with Fixed 24 or 36 powers for around $300.

Thanks Triumphman

Appreciate the input. I have looked at Vortex and Nikon, like them both, own a couple Nikons already. Will research the Weaver.
Thanks!!

My first would be a Nikon Monarch 6-24x50mm Side Focus. Swfa has them listed at $660 which is a tad hi I believe. http://swfa.com/Nikon-6-24x50-Monarch-3-Riflescope-P61610.aspx

Sightron SII Big Sky 4-16x42mm is another good one. Though $620 still a little higher than your listed max. http://swfa.com/Sightron-4-16x42-SII-Big-Sky-Riflescope-P9166.aspx

Coming down in price is the Burris Fullfield 2 6.5-20x50mm for just under $400. These are good scopes. http://swfa.com/Burris-65-20x50-Fullfield-II-Rifle-Scope-P53360.aspx

Bushnell Elite 6-24x40mm is another great scope for $499. If I couldn't swing the Nikon or Sightron this would be my choice. Bright clear optics The only draw back is the 1" tube and the crosshairs are a tad thick for my liking. http://swfa.com/Bushnell-6-24x40-Elite-Rifle-Scope-P48251.aspx

Now If you can fit it on the rifle without having to hold your head up off the stock you can get the Millett 6-25x56mm at $454 I have seen these at many F-class matches and some sniper matches. Many guys pick these up to get started in the long range game. http://swfa.com/Millett-6-25x56-LRS-1-Tactical-35mm-Riflescope-P40396.aspx

I'm a huge fan of Sightron scopes. The SII Big sky series are great. I have a 6.5-20x42mmAO on my .223 Varminter and 3-12X42mmAO on my .308HB. Both are superb.

FWIW, check Midway's selection of discounted Weaver Scopes. On opening page should be a banner about them. Click it on and peruse thru the Weavers.

I did this several days ago and ended up ordering my 3rd Weaver Super Slam. Super Slams are the top line of Weaver scopes. Paid $440 for a 4-20x50 with dual X reticle....free shipping on it. So happens, there is a $100 Weaver rebate on this model....so, with rebate, my cost is $340. This is a darn nice price for a very nice scope. Japanese made with very good optics and its internals are very good too.

Before ordering from Midway, compared their price with four or more other internet sellers of rifle scopes, such as Amazon, Optics Planet, Natchez and etc. Midway was $140 less than the lowest priced place I checked....general price on it was around $700.

So, might want to check the Weavers at Midway.

Also, visit Natchez shooters supply for what Nitrex TR1 3-9 or 3-10 scopes they have left to sell. Nitrex TR1s and Weaver Grand Slams are very comparable in quality. Both made in same Japanese plant with same internals and etc. Nitrex line was discontinued by same company that owns Weaver, so Nitrex warranty handled by Weaver. Darn good buy on the Nitrex at Natchez, you are paying well below half their original selling price. Last time I checked, remaining inventory at Natchez were priced for around $130 or less.
