Default Someone can make a fortune!

Wouldn't it be cool if there was software available where all you had to do was enter in the type of rifle you have and the type of scope and it spits out all your best options for bases and rings?

My problem is that it is a major PIA for me to get to any real civilization, specifically a gun shop that might have a good selection of decent rings for me to try to find the best setup. Most of them carry only Leupold, Warne, or Weaver rings/bases, and those are okay, but I'm looking for something a little different.

So I order rings online and they're either too high or too low and then I have to go through the PIA of doing an internet merchandise exchange.

Some rifles are proprietary with their rings/bases, like Kimber and Browning, but there are some ring manufacturers out there, like Talley, who make a one-piece base for a Kimber 84M. I found that out through a lot of research, but man what a hassle.

Tango, I think this is something you should get on right away and split the profit with me, if there is any.

While it would be awesome to have a complete database of this sort of info it's probably difficult unless you are Gander Mountain or Bass Pro to get access to all this stuff to try the different combinations. Plus some of the info is subjective, height for example, some people like their scopes a bit higher while others want it as low and close as possible.

However we could start small and list known combinations that work well.

Right, but the software would allow for a person to enter their own personal preference and spit out recommendations that fit that as well...! Maybe?

What you need is simple.

You need a database that has all rifles all optics and all bases and mounts. You then need to interconnect all them so that you can get mix and match what bases work with what rifles then what rings work with what bases and what rings work with what scope.

Then you can add in scope mounting length and hight. Now who can code a database. Oracle will be what we need to use I don't think MS Access will handle a database of this size. Because this sucker is going to be effing huge if you think about it.

Rifle manufacture + makes and model for 100 years. Pistol manufactures back a good 50 years.

Mount lists from all major manufactures Rings list then scope what scope works with what rifle. My model 30 express can't use many of the short stumpy scopes made today.

I think he we had an Oracle guy we could do it

Getting the dataset will be the issue. Get me the data in SQL server, excel, Access, Oracle, DB2 or most common Databases, and I can make the webapp.

I've got a couple Oracle DBA's who work for me, but I would use Cognos as the reporting tool, that's my area of expertise. With the dataset, I can make the reports easily.
