I have tried a couple of variable power pistol scopes and my arms are not long enough to utilize them. The ones I looked through seem to require more distance with the increase in magnification or is it normal to have to look through a black donut. I found a 2.5X worked very well on my Mini 30. During WW2 a lot of the "sniper scopes" were only 2.5X. More of a marksman than sniper and were probably only used to a few hundred yards in urban situations.
