I have a 4x12 Nikon Prostaff scope IMO a good scope for the money. (You may want more upper end magnification depending on how far you expect to shoot). Right now Midway has a mildot Prostaff for around $165 plus about $10 shipping. SWFA still has the vortex 6x24x50 Crossfire scope for $99 listed on their site, I don't know about shipping cost. Good rings are very important, I use Burris signature Zee.

Gatoragn no one is saying Burris is crap.

I just didn't find any VARMINT style scopes in his price range.

Like I said a 3-9 doesn't cut it in the varmint fields. 4-12x is the lowest I would go and trying to hit a pdog, squirrel, ground hog at 400 yards with a 4-12x is a lot harder than you think.

I have 2 varmint rifles. One wears a 6.5-20x42mm Nikon Monarch and the other wears a 6-24x50mm Nikon Monarch SF. I know plenty of guys that are using 12-42x nightforce scopes on their varmint rifles. These guys are also building full custom gun on Kelbly and stiller bench rest actions and going for the 1000+ yard shots.

This is great! Thank you for the options. I'll definately have to do my research. I want to get the right scope the first time around.

Look into some of the BSA copes as well, I've bought several over the past few years and they've been great. I really like the side focus feature on the Contender and Catseye I recently put on my 22-magnum and 17HMR.

Contender at Cabela's, I put the 4-16x40 on my Excel Magnum rifle.

Catseye at Cabela's, I put the 6-24x44 on my 917V.

This seems like a good scope for the money, spec-wise, don't know much about Barska, but for the price I might pick one up myself. They have some other decent deals going on right now on their website. Here's the link:
4-16x50 IR Sniper Scope by Barska Green Ir mil-dot - Riflescope by BARSKA

I will say BSA and Barska are CRAP. I have one BSA it works OK on a rimfire. I had one of their PLATINUM target scopes and my .4" groups went to .9" and the only thing that changed was the scope. It didn't track at all 4 clicks would move you 1" one time 3" another and .5" after that. None of them held zero on a centerfire rifle.

Why would you waste money on a BSA or a Barska when for the same price you can buy quality scopes?
