I'd rather my own son see me die on my feet as a free man, than watch him go, broken, into slavery.

Here's the thing... I WANT to do it myself, but I don't NEED it, therefor I'm in no big hurry.
One day, I will be mounting an original scope on my rifle, or getting a MN sniper. Until that day, mine also shoots excellent with irons.
It's a question of priorities/want/needs.
The other mounting options of mounting it from the rear sight base are very reasonable in price for the mounts, leaving money for a quality scope, and as Rick said, it's easily reversible.

Man I love this forum LOL. I was gradually making my way to that decision. I know this is off subject for this thread but it just hit me so I have to put it out there. I think the reason I love firearms so much is that because they are a form of lethal art. Now please don't take me wrong, my father always raised me to respect weapons and that the difference between "weapons" and "guns", is the person holding it and ill pass the same principle and respect down to my son and hope he keeps it alive as well. Anyway, how many paintings can you name me that can defend the artists family from a wannabe home invader? How many sculptures can protect a woman in a dark parking lot from a man who thinks she defenseless? We buy guns, and because of our love for our family, our God, and our second we make them our own weapons. My mosin is the same mosin as yours, or his, or hers; but at the same time, its MY mosin because of my love for it and my creativity for it. I just had this Epiphany and I needed to share it

This is my rifle...there are many like it, but this one is mine.
You want to see a real work of genius? Break down an MG, and figure out that one. Engineering beauty for sure.

M249 is my all time favorite, I'll tell anyone, any day of the week. It's a marvel in it's simplicity.

This is true. Mg's are still fairly new to me. I'm not an expert but I know what's going with rifles, and I'm familiar with handguns, but mg's are def my next discipline that I would like to pursue. The problem is the only experience I got with the them was my brief six years in the service as a heavy equipment operator. Its hard to find anyone with them that wants to give them up and fairly expensive I might add to get your hands on semi versions let alone mil spec

I did a briefer stint of 4 years in USMC infantry, but at least I even got to sleep with mine!
I had become so familiar with it that is was like taking an amputation every time I came back from overseas. I've still got the callus on my right pinkie (6 years later) from the way I held the pistol grip.

Nice. Yeah I only got that close to my m16. I did qualify on the 249 but I never got to really sit down with it and work with it

First time I got in trouble was over my SAW. In my unit all the new boots straight out of infantry school were issued SAWs or given crap dutys, and then my company decided to enact a new SOP, wherein all SAW gunners were to be only the senior E-3's. I was a boot private at the time, and only had 4 months in the fleet, but when my Lieutenant tried to tell me that I would not be a SAW gunner anymore I told him to "F*&^ off or promote me".
I kept the SAW, got an NJP, and wasn't allowed to be promoted to PFC for a year. I got the better end of the deal.
