scope for mosin
I have a 91-30. I have been keeping it on open sights and it shoots great. I was thinking of trying to put a scope on it. Any suggestions or tips. I've seen the mil spec scope that was made for the rifle, are there any other options?

Welcome to FTF, we have an intro section where you can introduce and tell us a bit about yourself.
There are many options for mounting scopes on a Mosin, the one I like best and want to do with my own, is to go the issue equipment route. Other than that, there are Mid to long eye relief options that mount from the rear sight base, and a rail that mounts on the rear sight base and places a scope over the receiver via a cantilever design.

There you go, happy shooting.

Thank-you! It helped a lot. What's your opinion though. I m still kind of torn. Ill mainly use the weapon as a recreational firearm, but I will be using it once a year possibly to hunt deer. Opinion.

I just put a scope on mine. There is a 3/8 dovetail under the rear sight. If you drive the pins out of the rear sight base you can tap it forward with a plastic hammer. Then just use 3/8 dovetail scope mounts. I used a pistol scope.

It is easliy changed back by simply putting the base back on and inserting the pins.

There are two ways you could go in my opinion, you could spend the money get a remake turn down bold and a remake PU scope w./ mount and make it look like the old sniper rifle. Or you could sporterize it have a gun smith put a modern turn down bolt and a modern scope mounting system above the receiver which would require drilling and tapping holes. Or if you just want to do a DIY you could always get a cheap scope mount that replaces your back iron sight and you would need to use a scout scope (long eye relief scope). But me Personally I plane on making mine like the old school sniper rifle just because I love the look!

See that's what I was thinking if I put a scope on mine. That weapon has so much history I would want to preserve the image as well.

Google Jim the bolt man, he can set you up with an authentic styled turn down handle. Me personally, I want an original scope set up, even one of the repros would make me happy (seems that repro mounts get mediocre reviews, and repro glass gets good reviews)
The problem with OEM scope set ups is that it involves some gunsmithing, and they are EXPENSIVE. An original mount costs anywhere from 200-500 bucks and an original PU scope can go for about the same price, and the scope just isn't as good quality as something more modern (because of the advances in technology we've had in the past 70 years)

Yeah that's what I'm leaning toward too. Keeping that original image, that history. That still begs the question on even whether to do it or not. It shoots so well with the irons
