Default scope for marlin 336

I'm getting a marlin 336 this friday and was interested as to what would be the best brand scope to put on it

"Brand" opens up a world of opinions.

Personally, I think a Marlin 30-30 (I'm assuming yours is 30-30) cries for a fixed 4-power scope. Take your pick.

I stay away from the cheap, Chinese knock off brands, but Japanese glass is usually pretty good.

I wouldn't put ultra-high end glass on the Marlin, but shop around and you should be able to outfit it nicely for < $400.

Great rifle, by the way. I have one and love it. It's a classic, and makes an excellent deer hunting rifle.

What reaseach have you done on the round and the rifle? What are your plans for the weapon?

Why do you need glass on a Marlin(assuming it's a 30-30)? They run out of steam before the average guy runs out of eyesight.

Have impression that a low power variable scope such as a 1.5-5x32 is very suitable for your rifle. Check Natchez Shooters Supply to see if they have any of the Nitrex TR1 1.5-5 left to sell. Think price was $120 or $130....a very good buy since it once sold for close to $280. The TR1s are basically Weaver Grand Slam scopes. If you check Natchez, use their search box to find it....just enter nitrex TR1 and you'll find them

There's certainly nothing wrong with shooting iron sights. I'm just in the "aim small, miss small" camp, and some magnification helps pick a spot, even when shooting relatively short yardages.

With some of the advances in modern ammo, like Hornady's LeveRevolution round, the 30-30 can be effective out to 150 - 200 yards, and that's stretching it a bit for these old eyes with the irons.
