scope inquire
I am looking at buying a scope and am new to the game. I know there are 3 types short, medium and long range. what distance is each one for on average. Are there any brand to steer clear off. What will a high quality one cost me on average. I am putting it on a sako .308

And the answer to your question is: That all depends.
Depends on the intended use, the rifle, the cartridge yada yada yada.
More money for a scope is paying for durability, quality of the scope, and light transmission. Two scopes, both being 3-9x40- but one having better optics, better coating of glass, better JOINING of multiple lenses, etc- will transmit more light (be brighter).
The other bugaboo of CHEEP scopes is holding a zero, and repeatable accuracy.
There is no one-size-fits-all. the scope on my 30-30 deer rifle is useless on my .220 Swift Varmint rifle. The scope on my .220, while great for nailing groundhogs at 600 meters, is lousy for shooting quick moving whitetails at 200 meters.
1000 meter rifle? Get out your checkbook.

And when you do get your range question sorted out try finding that scope here:
Opticsplanet Rifle Scopes by Leupold, Swarovski, Nikon, Bushnell, Zeiss, Simmons
I have had good experiences with them.

Optics Planet is higher on some scopes that I've cross referenced than SWFA. Try Quality optics and accessories from Leupold, Bushnell, Burris, Nikon and more! We know the rifle/caliber you're going to use-but how & at what yardage are you going to use it at? On what targets? Let us know and we can better help you.

For average shooting, 0..600 yards, a Sightron SII 4-16x42mmAO would work well. I have 3 Sightrons mounted now, on a Howa .308HB, CZ527 .223 Varminter, and a 1981 Browning BLR .308. I can't say enough positives about them.

Sako .308 is an impressive rifle and deserves good glass. Here is your problem though, buying scopes is a little like eating at a diner. The menu is so extensive that it's hard to decide. It's actually a good problem to have.
You will need to define what the "game" is. Scopes are very use specific, some can preform multiple tasks well.
I have several Leupold, a couple Nikon Monarch's, a couple Burris, and a Zeiss Conquest with the Rapid-Z 600 reticle. They all serve me well for their intended purpose, if I could only have one it would be the Zeiss.
Best of luck, hope you find one you like.

When you finally decide on a scope....
don't make the common mistake and buy cheap.
It's better at save your coins and buy a higher-end scope
than settling for a low-end product.
Trust me you'll be glad you did.

My 2 cent. Something around 3 X 9 is the best alround scope, meaning from hunting to target shooting. My longest shot ever on a deer was 289 yrds. and that shot was with a 2 1/2 X scope. I have a pile of Leupold scopes and it`s been over 15 years since I`ve bought any other brand of scope. I do get other brand on rifles from time to time, but if I like the rifle and keep it I put a Leupold on it.
