Default Ruger 77/22 rings

I have a Ruger 77/22 that I mounted a Leupold 2-7x scope on. I cannot get the scope to come on target try as I might. For some reason it shoots about 6 inches low and there is no more adjustment in the scope to raise the bullet impact. I'm suspicious of the rings and bases that were supplied with the rifle. Does anyone out there know if one base is higher than the other? The bases I have are both the same height. I highly doubt it is the Leupold scope at fault but that could be a possibility.

Ruger 77 Models, that I've ever seen, use a prietary(sp) Ring system, so if there is a Base Mount, then I would be suspicious. I have seen Mounts that are built specifically for the 77 Models to change to a Weaver Ring Mount system, so this might be what you have.

First, take Rifle and look at total package from the side. Does Scope look to be on a level with Receiver/Barrel? Or does Scope appear to be pointed upwards?
If there is any angling of Scope, does it appear to be coming from the Rings or Base Mount? I'm thinking the Base is your problem. Can it be turned around to realign the Scope?

I will say, one time I got some Weaver Medium Rings and they were packaged incorrectly, as one ring was just a couple mm's taller than the other, and really threw off my 30-06.

Just pulled out my 77/22 Magnum and yes, (Factory Rings) are same heigth, which are the Medium/Tall model I believe. I have a 3-12x44mm Scope on it and there's at least 1/4" Barrel clearance. If you also have a Mount and Rings on top of the Factory Ring Mount, then your Scope may be too far above the Barrel and this is where you may be having troubles of getting Barrel to come up high enough. Get some Short Rings(bring Scope closer to Barrel) to see if this will cure your problem.

Default 77/22

Thanks for your insight but if I go to lower rings my bolt handle won't clear.

Shimming is the easy way out -maybe not the most elegant, but easiest.
Any aluminum can will do the trick, though a selection of varying thickness of shim stock will appeal to the OCD crowd. Just raise up the aft of the scope until you get back a reasonable amount of elevation adjustment.
Quick, easy, cheap.

Ya think you might get us some photos(side and Rear) to see what you have? I just don't see what you have to be able to help.

On rugers rimfire 77 both rings are the same height . The centerfire rifles the rings on them are NOT the same height. Is there a change you have centerfire rings on your rimfire rifle? Are the different heights??

Actually it's a shooting friend's rifle and I have no pics to share. He has it at a local gunsmith at present so hopefully it will get figured out. Thanks for your reply.

I really think that is the problem. My friend who owns the rifle did a trade at a gun show. He had a Mod 77 .270 that he traded for the .22 and liked the scope that was on the 77 (Leupold mentioned) so he just kept the rings and did the trade. The 77/22 did not have rings with it. He tried shimming and that did not work either. He has it with a local gunsmith now who will figure it out I'm sure.

The thig about using the rifle rings is it puts the scope in a hell of a bind. No shimming will fix it .
Heres a ruger chart on rings-
http://media.midwayusa.com/pdf/reference/ruger_ring_chart.pdf

Most companies now make ruger rings that fit a rimfire 77/22 including ncstart at about 7 bucks.
