Default Remington 700 SPS SS 30-06

Looking to buy a remington 700 sps ss 30-06 and I was looking for a great match for the scope? After some research I like the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 for $429 but I was wondering if it's worth it to save a little more for Viper PST 6-24x50 for $750? If so why? This set up is just for fun and target practice to see if I can get out to 1000 yards. Looking for a one time purchase to start out at 100 yards and work my way up. Unless you recommend a much better scope. Thanks in advance

Either one would be great, Vortex scopes are excellent. Yesterday I finally got a 700 SPS in .308 and put a cheap scope in Weaver mounts just to be able to go out and shoot it. When I can afford it, I was leaning towards a Leupold VXR Patrol 4-12x Ballistic FireDot, but will check out the Vipers as well. I have the cheaper 4-12x Vortex Diamondback on my CZ .22 and it is a joy to look through, bright and sharp from one edge to the other. I plan on shooting man size silhouettes out to 800, I think 12x will be adequate. I guess for 1000 yards and shooting for the smallest groups, more would be better, but 24x seems a bit overkill IMO. A cheaper optic would "washout" at the highest powers, like 18x and above, but if you are planning to spend $750 then a scope of that quality should do o.k. at extreme magnification.

Cool thanks. How do you think the Vipers would hold up to the recoil of the 30-06?

The Viper should hold up fine to the 30/06's recoil.
