Optics for a 338

i have a 338 win mag that i need to put glass on
what is reccommended for 338 win mag ?

Buy a good quality 3 X 9 scope. The .338 will eat a cheap scope.

whats considered quality ?

The Leopold line makes a very serviceable scope. I have used a 6X Swarovski for many years no problems. :)

I have a Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10 that has given me no problems on my 338WM. However, my 338 eats scope mounts about every 200 or so rounds. I'm going to try some Talley's next and see how they hold up.

I'd look at the Leupold VX III or Zeiss Conquest with Warne rings. If you're hunting dangerous game, I'd keep the power to x6 or lower as your shots likely won't be over 150 yards. Here's what I used on my .375 H&H magnum for bear hunting in AK:

I've had very good luck with a Leupold VX111 3.5-10X50mm on my Browning BAR .338.

If you're willing to spend a little more, a Trijicon Accupoint 3-9X40 would be near ideal for a .338.

I used a 1 3/4 X 6 Leupold VXlll on mine and loved it. I lived in AK and want a BIG field of view if I need it 'up close'!;) And the 6X is more than enough for big game shots even at 300+ yds.

For the magnification you are talking about the Bushnell argon elite fits the bill. Little higher than your price but for the features the best scope at this price. It gets great reviews.
