Best inexpensive scope for a .22 WMR is................the Center Point 4-16x40 at Walmart for $69.98. Period.
Regular .22lr scopes will end up failing over time simply because they were never made to handle the extra oomph that the Magnum round carries. I can give ya a double handful of dead Tasco's & Bushnells that have died to 'em.
There are many scopes that will "do" for a .22 Magnum, and a few more that were made specifically for it & the .17, but for all the Center Point does you'd pay a LOT more to get the same features...IF you could find one that does have all the bennies. . Mil-dot thin-line reticle, Scope Rings, green or red internal lighting for those dusk/dawn shots, variable Objective, zero-locking windage & elevation settings, & flip-up dust covers included.
Main benefit of 4-16x40 over a 3-9x30 or 3x9x40 is simply UP CLOSE VISION. More power simply means more accuracy. It's the reason the Army puts a two-man team in the field, one with a 3x9 scope and another with a More Powerful Spotting Scope to tell the nugget with the 3x9 WHERE TO AIM TO GET A HIT, because at long ranges all the rifleman sees is a black blob. Since most folks don't go to hunt or to the range with a spotter with a bigarse spotting scope...you can do it yourself with a 16 power (or more powerful) scope.
Besides, as you get older, you'll need that 4-16 cause yer eyes won't enjoy that 3-9 after age 40
Might as well get a good one up front.
Not to mention that it just plain looks good
