I just can't say go with a 3-9x40 I hate them scopes. Maybe look for a 4-12x40 or 42mm.
Why 4-12 Capt?

If it's a 45-70, a scope will only getcha Very Specific ranges, dang thang has a trajectory like a Mortar at 500-1000yds.

Get a tang peep or Vernier(?sp) scale meant for a 45-70. You'll probably be happier.

because 3x9 will only letcha see so far...yes, you can see a blob of a man-shaped target at 1000yds with a 3x9...but unless you have a spotter...that's all you'll see.

The whole reason military units send out a two man team is because the Spotter has a Kick@$$ high-power spotting scope so he can tell the schmoe with the 3x9 exactly where to place his reticle & send his shot on the blob he sees way out there.

So if you REALLY want to see what & where you are shooting at...especially at long (500+yds) distances without a spotter, get the highest power scope you can getcher hands on. If you are planning 500+ yard shots...minimum 16x50 power is where I'd start.

Realistically, I figure most shots will be between 100-300yds. It's a 45/70, if I'm looking at anything beyond that, I'll break out the .308 as needed.

I seriously thought about a Williams peepsight, but in this case, I think I want a scope.

I had a Williams peepsight on a Marlin 1894 .357 and it was the goods. But I want the 45/70 set up for more serious business than plinking with pistol rounds.

CA357 - Go with the 3 x 9. At those ranges, it will treat you right and it won't break the bank....

Get a leupold 2-7 or 1 3/4 to 6. Something with the objective lens larger than the eyepiece. I had a 1 1/2 to 5 for a while but it didn't gather sufficient light. I've considered going with some type of red dot sight, since the difficulty generally seems to be seeing the crosshairs, not the animal. That said, I just ordered Williams peep sights with fiber optic front sights for my Marlin.

Hmmm. I'm going to stop by the shop tomorrow and see what's on the shelves scope-wise.

My bud has a guide gun, he gota 2.5 Pentax shotgun scope from me and put it on. It's good to go, and lightweight. It's got a circle in the reticle, but he likes it in for reduced light. His eyes aren't great at distance. He's getting about 1300 fps or slightly more with lead bullets and the rifle is surprisingly accurate, about 1.5".

I like lightweight scopes for heavy recoiling rifles. Problem is you can't find them as easily as you can find the ubiquitous 3 x 9.

Why because they are like the 10/22. They work but there are much better options out there. I personaly like high power on my optics. the lowest power I have on any of mine is a 15x on my Rem 513t. If I could afford it I would have a 12-42x56mm NF on my 308 or a 10-60-56mm March. Then I would move the 6-24 over to the 223 that is topped with a 6-18. The 6-18 would go over to the 513 and the 15x would drop down to my mossy 46 I still need to get a better scope for it too. come to think about it.

The 3-9 is so popular because it does both ok not great but ok and every line of scopes out there has a stinking 3-9x in it. The market is flooded with them they are cheap the cheapest variable out there I personaly believe that the 4-12 give you a much better range from 4x on the low end to 12x on the high end. If you are using decent glass and not BSA or BARASKA. then you will see a big difference in what you can and can't see.
