DefaultNeed Scope Help

I picked up a Marlin 1895SS than I'm cleaning up and refinishing right now. I feel optimum range for my old eyes is around 100yds or so. I figure that big ol' bullet shoud be effective a lot farther than that, so I'm thinking of scoping it. First, I thought about a peepsight, but I think a scope will be better.

It would have to be stout to handle the recoil and it has to be reasonable in price.

What would you optics experts suggest?

My first immediate thought was a Leupold 3x9 VX II/III. You just can't go wrong with a Leupold and their lifetime warranty is excellent.

Having said that, we recently put a Bushnell Elite 3200 on a customer's pack in rifle that was also 3 x 9 and it was a nice scope. I liked it, and I think it's about $50 plus cheaper than the Leupold.

Bushnell's low end stuff doesn't ring my bells, but their Elite line is well made and seems to be durable.

I think the eye relief is probably a little better on the Leupold, I have exclusivley Leupold scopes on all my stuff so I definitely bias, but if price is a factor, check out the 3200 and see what you think....

Thanks J.D. I'll look into those. I've had some old Redfields that were excellent and I've been going with Nikon on newer stuff, but I think I want to keep this scope dead nuts simple.

I'm partial to Burris 3x9x40's and if it is a 45/70?

I shoot 405 gr FN Rem bullet (reloads) and 125yards is pretty good, beyond that you have to adjust elevation for a deer size kill a bit. Now the old trap door loads 100 is max and still has quite a loop in the trajectory arch.

Yup, it's a 45/70 with a 22" barrel.

I will second both Kill and Dillinger. You can't go wrong with either one. I wouldn't go for a 3-9 though I would go for something a little on the smaller side. say a 2-7 or 1.5-4 this is a short range gun 200 to 300 yards max. Might also look at Nikon's and Burris. Burris are some stout scopes as well.

CA357 is getting on in years my friend, he might need a little help for some "longer" shots....

J.D. Thanks, I think.

I'm looking at 3-9x40's right now. The Burris Elite looks pretty darn good. What do you think of a 3-9x40 Nikon ProStaff in comparison?

I can get either one for cost at the shop, assuming they're in stock.

Well if he would get on the CA hippie bandwagon and smoke the dope his eyesight might not be as bad. Just kidding.

I just can't say go with a 3-9x40 I hate them scopes. Maybe look for a 4-12x40 or 42mm.
