Default Couple of scope questions

I'm a little confused and have been trying to work this out on my own but I come to you all for some sage advice.

In trying to sight in various scopes on a couple of rifles and a shotgun recently, I have gotten myself confused about whether I am moving the POI or the crosshairs to the POI when adjusting the scope. Invariably, when the gun is say shooting say high/left and I adjust the scope knobs in that direction, the POI moves further to the high/left. Do I have something really backwards or am I just not understanding how the scope is designed to be moved?

I have been able to get the scopes zeroed but it seems as though everytime I have to move the knobs opposite of what I first thought. I need someone to explain this.

if your bullet holes are high left you need to turn the knobs down right.

So basically I would be moving my POI to the crosshairs. I am not moving the crosshairs to the point of impact.

Like jon said if your shooting high left you move your knobs down and to the right.

If you are shooting low right then you would move your knobs up and left.

To make it even more simple, but more costly using more ammo, only move one axis at a time. For instance, move up or down first, then left or right first, it usually not best to make both moves at once.
Happy shooting.

Dude that is just a waste of ammo. It does't matter weather you make 1, 2, or 5 moves it is all the same.
