Default Bushnell TRS-25 for Umarex M4 22?

My son has a Colt/Umarex M4 Tactical 22. He wants to buy an inexpensive Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 red dot sight for it and is wondering if he'll be able to mount it on the rail without any height-modifying accessories. He's concerned the front sight assembly will obscure the view through the optics.

I have one of those too and ran into the same issue. I took off the rear sight and mounted a low cost (ok...cheap) BSA red dot sight and the front sight was just too distracting so I took the dot off and remounted the rear sight. I have thought about getting one of those rails that you mount on the existing top rail that cants a short rail 45 degrees to the right and mount a dot sight on that. That way I could hold the gun normally when using the open sights or roll the gun slightly to the left and use the dot. I don't think he will be able to get a dot high enough to clear the front sight and still have it usable.

You can either buy a 3/4" riser or you can get the TRS25 with a built in high rise mount for AR rifles. The risers are only about $10. My wife's 15-22 has the riser and TRS25 co-witnessed to folding irons. I use the TRS25 with low mount on my 10-22. Great sight.

I use a UTG riser with a TRS25 on one of my ARs. It puts the front sight at about mid window of the red dot. It's really no worse than a reap ghost ring. If he is using the dot correctly with both eyes open, he will mostly see the dot on the target, and the front sight becomes irrelevant. In fact you can completely tape over the front window of the sight, and use both eyes open and still get hits on the target. Red dots were not intended to be used like scopes where you focus through the sight. They were made to give a dot image that your brain superimposes on a target for faster hits.

Thanks guys. Apparently he's ordered a Sniper Tactical 4x32 prismatic glass crosshair reticle scope (for about $100 ) and says if he has a problem he's going to remove the front sight assembly.
