Another one that I had purchased from MidwayUSA is the Simmons White Tail Classic 6.5 x 20 50mm AO they have on sale a few times a year for $129 for the Mil-Dot and $109 for the Duplex/Truplex cross hairs. I have only used it on my AR and a few .22lr because I am unable to shoot anything with much recoil due to a paralyizing form of Rheumatoid Arthirtis. It had ALOT of all good reviews on it, but, I cannot vouch for higher caliber. Has held zero fine on my AR.

Although....I tell you, I have been eyeing a Nikon ProStaff sight, 3x9 BDC that they make for a .22lr for $149.99 -$10 + $30 rebate ( which may have ended recently ) and the same scope for higher calibers ( Different ballistic reticle ) for $179. The glass is so clean and clear, bright.....I have just not been able to get it as other priorities on build jobs, as I have several scpes alread. More of a WANT than a NEED.....but....I am going to get that scope!! :-)

I was super lucky recently, in that I found a Nikon Monarch 1.5 x 4.5x20mm for only $30!! It is used, but not abused.....great scope for the AR for close range work. I still want to get an Eotech also...but again....a want more than a need...but...I will get one of these also....:-)

the Nikon ProStaff scopes are pretty decent scopes at a decent price. i had one in 4-12x40 on a 25-06 and it was a great scope. paid about $200 for it and really liked the clarity. after using it for a bit, didn't really care for the BDC reticle, but would buy another again, but just go with the standard reticle next time.

On a tight budget, I think it is hard to beat the Nikon Buckmaster series. I have had one on my .06 for about five years and it works fine for me. I live in a place where most shot are taken in under 300 yards.(which sometimes gets translated to 1000 yards in the telling) Dang trees get in the way. If it is a 1000 yard shot, I will just drive over and reduce the range. If the truth be known, I bet there are not very many people on this forum who have the equipment or the skill level to hunt at 1000 yards. I know I don't.

I put an Ncstar on my Saiga 308@ $100 and have been completely satisfied. Even with the quick release rail it stays 0'd

Yea... have been thinking about that myself, have a few other things to buy first, but I think I am going to go with just the plain reticle on the Nikon ProStaff myself. The BDC is interestng, but I like to see EXACTLY the point of impact/aim I am shooting at.

personally i see the BDC reticle more of an advantage to a hunter. i don't hunt anymore, just target shoohing, so a regular reticle is much more suited to my needs. i looked at the Nikoplex reticle when i bought the BDC, and wished i had bought it instead. so the fact for me is, the scope would be perfect had i bought the other one instead. scope is very clear and works great.

FWIW, Someone earlier suggested a Weaver 40/44 scope. Own one myself, a 3.8-12x44 aspherical lens model. Not all 40/44s are aspherical lens. Only the 40/44s with lowest power of 2.8 or 3.8 is one. Basically it is a lens system originally developed for 35mm SLR cameras. Anyway, darn good optics in it. Many years ago Simmons introduced this lens system in their AETEC line of scopes and they had a good reputation before Simmons quality slipped. Simmons moved AETEC manufacture form Philippines to China. Guess what, the Weaver 40/44s are made in Philippines and rumor has it made in same plant the AETECs were once made.

Gent I shoot with on a regular basis, showed up one day with a friends rifle that had same model 40/44 as mine. He is a very experienced shooter, reloader and etc. You will not find a low priced scope on any of his centerfire rifles. His latest scope purchase is a Sightron III for his 6XC rem-nut 700 action custom rifle. He had his friend's rifle to develope an accurate hunting load for it. A few minutes after sitting at the shooting bench with the rifle for the first time and firing a few rounds, he will loudly exclaim, "this cheap a-- scope has some of the clearest glass I've ever seen."

Recently received a Natchez Shooters Supply October catalog. Natchez has reduced the prices of their Aspherical lens 40/44s. The 3.8-12x44 is now $140. Check other places with it to sell and you might find it selling for around $215.

for about $250 at academy you can get a lower end leopold and the nikon buckmarks are nice in the range for wat your talking about. you might also try checking your local pawn shops alot of times they'll get in a high dollar scope and sell it for way less than its worth due to not knowing what they have. for instance i picked up a swarovski z6 for $600 one time so check the pawn shops

For an all around good scope for the money, I would look at the swfa super snipers, the glass is clear, turrets function, and you get the features of the higher dollar tactical scopes in a budget package. As for base and rings, I use an egw rem 700 base, with tps rings.
