Redfield Revolution at the $200 point or a Burris if you go $300. I have one of each of these brands.

I also have Vortex (Mueller) Viper on an AR, it works fairly well. Good enough for a DPMS I suppose.

I bought the Nikon Prostaff BDC 4-12x40 for my .308 . Love it . I have a Nikon Monarch also and glass wise I cant tell the difference , its the added features of the monarch , like aluminum turret caps instead of plastic on the Prostaff , larger aluminum turrets , easier turning focus and zoom that I can tell the difference in .The prostaff came in at $219 out the door . The Monarch was almost double that . If the added features are worth the extra $200+ go for it .

As I've mentioned in an earlier post, take a look at a Nitrex TR1 scope at Natchez shooters supply....that's www.natchezss.com. Nitrex TR1 is basically a Weaver Grand Slam.....yea, the Nitrex is a discontinued brand, but ATK owns both Nitrex and Weaver. Nitrex was made in same plant at the Weavers Grand and Super Slams, same optics, same internals.....darn fine scope. Being discontinued, the Nitrex that Natchez has left is a heck of a buy for a good scope. LOL, have two of the Nitrex and wish I'd bought more of the higher powered ones before Natchez sold out.

Another scope worth considering at Natchez is another Weaver....the Weaver 40/44 3.8-12x44 aspherical lens model. Price is reduced to around $130ish. Should sell for around $180 Plus. This 40/44 is made in the Philippines and it has some very nice optics....turrets function OK too. Own one of these and wouldn't hesitate buying another if I wanted this power range. As a shooting buddy once said when shooting a friend's rifle (with this scope) to develop an accurate deer hunting load for it......"I can't believe how clear this cheap a## is." Chuckle, he is somewhat of a scope snob.

Looking for another scope for my 2nd build. So are you saying the prostaff glass is the same as the Monarch glass? If so I am going to save some money. Thanks

I cant say for 100% and Im sure there is a difference as there are many different factors in glass coatings , etc but to the naked eye I can not tell any difference looking through it at any distance out to 300 yards between the Monarch and the Prostaff that I have

Bushnell Trophy XLT 1-4x24. 30mm tube, illuminated 1 moa red dot, 4A reticle. At close range it is very fast and you keep both eyes open. 4X is enough for a hunting scope at 300 yards. Remember that for years the 4X32 scope was the go to scope and unless you are hunting squirrels at 300 yards you dont need more. I have one on my AR.

For hunting 5-20 is more of a varmint scope, not a game scope.

JTJ, For some reason, people don't hunt, therefore they don't understand you can't hit what you can't find. That comes into play in both short range shots and fairly long range. A 5-20 power scope for a 30 yard shot is pretty useless on medium game. Even the 4x I use is limited at close range, but not as bad. 1-4, 2-7 would be the best of both worlds. Cabelas has a Leupold
VX2 2-7x32mm For 299.00 plus $20.00 off. That is a good deal. They also have the Nikon pro staff, but you are not getting the same quality. BTW, I am not a Leupold fan, but this is an exceptional scope.

jp; The longest shot I have ever taken on a game animal was 70 yards with my 3-9X scope set at 3X. The shortest was 5 yards with irons. Most were in the 25 yard range. 4X at that range is too much. My 3-9x40 is now sitting on a 223 bolt. 2-7X is a very nice range for a hunting rifle. My eyes are not what they used to be but I was able to keep 2 moa at 100 yards from a rest with my 308 BLR and a peep sight and that is good enough for a hog or deer. I am thinking of adding a red dot using a front scope mount and keeping the peep.
