3x9 40mm Leupold VX-I effective sight range for hunting/target shooting
 

Hey guys, I recently bought a Mauser 98k for hunting and decided to put a 3x9 40mm Leupold VX-I on it with a German #1 reticle( for the look)

Now what I am wondering, is what is the effective sight range/picture for hunting with that scope for coyotes or deer
And
What is the effective sight picture/range for a 9" steel target?

not quite sure what your asking. but the aim point is the very tip of the post. it is a very very effective reticle. it gives an uncluttered view but allows the shooter to have a fast reticle but also a very fine target reticle by concentrating on the very tip of the post.

its my favorite reticle but its not offered on many scopes.

But my question is, for an average hunter, what will be the effective range of this scope?

A 3x9 is plenty for shots to 300 after that a 4x16 or a 5x20 is what it takes to zoom in

Thank you, now if I'm target shooting out to like 600 yards, will it still be fine?

600 yards on a 3x9 I say no, not enough scope for shots much past 300 yards. For 500 600 an up u need to step up to a 4.5x14 or higher mag scope, it will provide u a clear view of the target. At 600 yards at 9 power u wont be able to see the target hardly at all if any. 600 yard shots are not easy alot of trigger time is needed so start shorter an work yer way up. I shoot nearly every day with a christensen arms custom built rifle in 338 win mag, I shoot to 1000 yards with it but im using a very high end scope to see the target at those ranges.i use a swarovski z6 its a 5x30x50 scope
