.280 Scope
Whats a good long range scope for a remington 740 .280? I dont have the gun yet but I know I will soon and want to know a good scope for this gun.

The 740 isn't exactly a long range gun, nor is the .280 a long range cartridge.

A quality 3-9 scope is all the power you'll ever need.

Pretty much agree with locutus, except on power of scope. Nothing wrong with a 3-9 scope, just would prefer at least a 12 power variable scope.

Take a look at the Weaver 40/44 3.8-12x44 aspherical lens scope at Made in Philippines, darn good optics in it...own one myself. Price is reduced to $140 and others sell it for anywhere from $180 to $210 dollars.

Thanks, thats exactly what I wanted to know

How can you say that the .280 is NOT a long range cartridge when it certainly IS? I think you would agree that the .270 is a long range cartridge. Then please understand that the .280 can do anything the .270 can do and then some. Plus, it offers a wider selection of bullet weights.

Take a look at Weaver Classic V16(4-16x42A/O). Got one mounted on a Weatherby 243Win.
Nikon Buckmaster in 4-12 or 6-24 would be great also.

High powered is not better IMHO, neither is a large objective. If you are hunting and a buck pops out at 50 yards, a 6-24 is not going to make it easy to pick up the buck. Quality glass will out perform cheaper and big. A VG quality 2-7 or
3-9 either 32, 38 or 40mm objective will easily take game out to 400 yards. A strait 4x scope will make shots out to 300 yards fairly easy. Another point to remember is the 740 is called the Woodmaster. It is accurate for hunting purposes that really don't exceed 200 yards. It has never had a reputation as a long range platform, just to many moving parts for accuracy sake. If you have one that shoots 3" groups at 100 yards, off bags, at a range, your about average.
Try it off hand and your groups will get much larger. It was designed as a woodland hunter made for quick follow up shots.
Weaver makes a 2.5-7x32mm that would be perfect, the Leupold VXII 2-7x33mm would be an awesome choice also. Best of luck.
