1x per 100 yards Rule of Thumb?
Has anyone heard of this. I keep seeing it on another message board.
The thing is this. In optics you only need 1x per 100 yards. So to shoot 300 to 900 yards a 3-9x scope is all you need. I am sure you can do it but why limit yourself so such a low powered scope.
So by that thinking I should be shooting 600 to 2400 yards with my 6-24x scope. Who came up with this? I have looked at targets at 1k with a 9x scope the corsshairs covered the entire target. Even with a 6-24x the crosshairs are HUGE on a 1k target. If you look are Night Force scope and some of their reticles for long range shooting they are very thin and very basic. two lines and a dot on one i like the looks of the most.

That doesn't make any sense to me at all. Can you do it? Sure you can but why not use something bigger if you can? If I can clearly see something I find it much easier to hit.

Shooting WHAT? A military sniper is shooting at a BIG something- a people. When I am shooting for groups, the center of my target is the size of an aspirin. As a combat scope, the 24X has a couple of drawbacks- more internal glass equals darker scope (all other things being equal) and field of view is sharply limited- my paper target is not running all over the place- I can find it with no trouble, even with a 3 ft field of view at 100 yards. During WW II, IIRC, the standard scope on the M1C rifle was 2.5 power.

There is a big argument over on TFL about this. It amazes me what some people over there will say. I am just glad that the mods here don't allow some of the info they allow over there here. Some people give really bad advice.

For Medium sized game I use a 4x scope out to 300 yards. For Targets out to 400 I use a 4-12 or 6.5x20. 1x at 100 is not practical for anything. Just use peep sights instead.

It is just like when you start a sporterized rifle thread and all the C&R guys come in and start blasitng everyone for ruining history and you all shouldn't be allowed to own rifles for doing that to them.

I dont' think that rule would apply to me and my skills.
1x @ 100 yards - man size target - sure
1x @ 100 yards - 1" dot - maybe
2x @ 200 yards - man size target - sure
2x @ 200 yards - 1" dot - not me
3x @ 300 yards - man size target - sure
3x @ 300 yards - 1" dot - no way

The 1x per 100 meters is a military thing. It is intended as a general rule of thumb, but YMMV.
I've found that the quality of the glass is far more important than the magnification avail.
I think it was intended to address the propensity for shooters to crank up to their highest avail setting, thereby being unable to track moving targets easily and being unable to quickly find targets due to limited field of view.
But for dedicated paper punchers the sky has always been the limit. 24x and 36x scopes for shooting at moderate ranges are not uncommon.
I prefer lower powered scopes to higher powered scopes, but it is all personal taste.
