Might have a piece of crud hanging in the chamber indicator might be worth hitting it with some power blaster see if anything knocks loose.

Im not a huge fan of indicators that are just extra parts. Its a slight negative on the xdm line

Might also be some crud in the extractor channel hanging it up.

Debris in the gun could certainly cause my symptoms. But I've had the thing apart (at least field stripped) and I've thoroughly cleaned everything I can reach. Gonna take it to the gunsmith Sunday.

Forgot to post a followup.

Gunsmith said the problem was my use of WWB ammo. I told him that didn't make a lot of sense since I can repeat the problem with snap caps or with any other ammo of his choice. He also suggested that the problem was that the gun was dry. I had brought it in right after a match and a Classifier. It was pretty dry at that point, but the hangup is repeatable even after a proper lube with a snap cap in the chamber. He's done good work for me in the past, but I can't figure out this response.

I've inspected the rails as closely as I can (magnifying glass) and find no burrs or other irregularities. The indicator is free to move while the gun is in the stuck position, so I don't think it's involved (it just looked that way at first).

Since that time I've used the gun in an IDPA match (can't find 9mm ammo for the matches, grrrr....) Had no malfunctions Saturday, but when I took the gun apart to clean it after the match, the hangup was still repeatable.

Change the recoil spring. Had the same problem with a 5.25 - new recoil spring solved the problem.

Checked on Wolff website (gunsprings.com). They list springs for only the 4.5" XDm, not the 5.25". I have a question in to their customer service group to see if they make the 5.25" spring set. Did you use a Wolff spring Cortez?

Kinda makes me wonder if SA just used 5" springs on some of those.

Got a response from Wolff:

"Reports from customers indicate that the 5.25” XDm uses the same spring as the 4.5” XDm pistol. We have not had a 5.25” XDm in house as yet but we have sold many of our spring to other 5.25” XDm owners and they have verified the springs are the same and work in their pistols. Please click HERE to go to the Springfield page on our web site to review and order.

Regards,

John Andrews

Wolff Gunsprings"

OK, now a different question. How many rounds is a recoil spring good for on a 5.25" barrel 45acp gun? I have about 1000 rounds or maybe a bit more in the gun at this point. Someone told me they were good for 800-1000 rounds. Is this a worn out spring? Do I need to change springs every 1000 rounds?

Most believe that the recoil spring is good for 5-6000 rounds. Just as a side note, I could do the same thing with my XDm's and my Glocks with factory installed recoil springs. I replaced all of my factory recoil springs with aftermarket wolff recoil springs, upping the spring weights to allow for shooting hotter loads. I now cannot make my slide stay out of battery on any of my guns.
