I purchased my first handgun, my sub-compact XD40. I love the way it shoots and how it feels in my hand, but I am wondering why sometimes my slide will cock and load after the clip is empty. Its not happening everytime, I would say right around half the time it does it. Anyone else have this problem with their XD? |

Make sure that neither one of your thumbs is preventing the slide lock from catching the slide. __________________ NRA Life Member

Your mag follower may be dragging a little bit on the inside of the magazine. That could slow the rise of the follower just enough to miss engaging the slide stop. Take your mag apart, clean it, and feel for burrs on the follower. __________________ "Don Corleone: I'm a superstitious man, and if some unlucky accident should befall Michael-if he is to be shot in the head by a police officer, or be found hung dead in a jail cell... or if he should be struck by a bolt of lightning - then I'm going to blame some of the people in this room; and then I do not forgive. If it's a new gun, it should have 2 mags, check and see if it does it with both mags, if not but one and the same mag all the time, may be the mag. If it does with both mags, you may be hitting slide stop or limp wristing gun. __________________ "LIVE FREE OR DIE TRYING TO KEEP ME FROM DOING SO" |

Not to be a smart a$$ or anything, but it's a magazine. A clip is something different. __________________ Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) - a system of government where those least capable of leadership are elected by those least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to succeed or provide for themselves are rewarded with goods and services paid for by wealth confiscated from a diminishing number of people who actually work and produce.

Are you using your slide lock as a slide release? Some people like to push the slide lock down with their thumb to load the chamber. This is bad practice and can wear the edge off the slide lock causing it to malfunction. Always pull the slide back manually after inserting a new magazine to load the pistol and release the slide lock. __________________

Likewise, I'm sure; and not to be a wiseguy either:
You are entirely incorrect!

Sorry for the lateness in getting back here. To answer a few questions, yes sometimes I use the slide release to load the chamber, that will definitely stop from now on. Second, this happens with both mags but its not everytime. I just got done thoroughly cleaning the gun today and hopefully I can get out to the range on Saturday to see how that helped. Thanks again for all the replies. |

 Wise decision, charlescarr51!
Your support hand should be over the top of the slide, toward the rear, with your palm facing down. Your trigger finger should be arrow straight. (Or, else, you're going to hear a sudden and really loud noise!) Pull the slide all the way back and let it go. Ideally, the muzzle should be pointed at the target when you do this. |

I know how to properly close the slide, just didnt think there were any adverse problems by using the slide release only. |
