+P????

Can anyone explain to me what +P ammo is? I'm kinda confused here.....

Overpressured ammo. It's ammo that's loaded hotter than the typical ammo of that caliber to give more muzzle velocity and knockdown power. Used a lot for defensive rounds. You want to make sure your gun can handle the extra pressure of a +p round.

As he said up there ^^^. Group called SAAMI establishes standards on size, pressure for sporting cartridges. 4 cartridges have a separate loading, designated +P- loaded to a higher pressure. Those 4 are 9mm Parabellum, .45 ACP and .38 Special. ALL .38 Super ammo is considered +P, since it is a hotter loading than the parent, .38 Auto.

There is NO OFFICIAL standard for +P loadings in any other cartridge, nor any official standard for calling something +P+.

9mm 35,000 psi
+p 38,500

38 Special 17k
+P 20K

45 ACP 21K
+P 23K

.38 Auto 26.5
.38 SUPER 36.5

Thanks for the info guys. That helps a lot. I was in a local LGS and saw some 40 S&W +P ammo. Piqued my curiosity.

Maker can CALL anything +P- but SAAMI says there are 4- and no more (at this time).

My personal thoughts? If your handgun does not have enough power to make you happy, get a more powerful handgun.

There is no manufacturers currently producing .40S&W+P

From the way I understand it the modern guns in those calibers are much stronger than the originals. But they did not want to simply raise the standard pressure on those cartiridges because it would be dangerous in the older guns. That is why they came up with the +P designation.

380 is also loaded to +P.

I think there is a Jennings Turbo 25acp that really kicks a$$.:)

My Nano states that prolonged use of +P ammo will reduce the service of the components of the firearm.
Though i shoot 124 FMJ at the range i do use +P for carry, so I shoot some +P for proficiency and carry them as well. Doesn't sound too prolonged, right?
