The XDM will handle +P loads for defense without any problem. With any pistol I would not recommend a steady diet of +P loads in extreme volume. That is the same even for revolvers. But no problem at all with sighting the pistol in with the +Ps and shooting enough of them to keep proficient with them for defense. I would shoot standard target round ball rounds through the pistol for just practicing and general target type shooting. Also the consideration of shooting an excessive amount of full blown ammo is the individuals ability to handle them without developing a flinch which can be predominant in the sub compacts. It all depends on the individual. But for weapon extended durability I would suggest the above information. The XDs are fine pistols and very good regarding quality compared to the cost.
