New gun owner

I just recently purchased an XD 40 subcompact. I was wondering what type of ammo was the best for the buck and the best to use as far as burning clean

Remmington UMC is the cheapest and cleanest I've used. Have yet to see any cheaper ammo that is as clean. Worst is Winchester white box IMO

I like Winchester White Box, American Eagle, and Federal. Dick's sells some Ultramax that is cheap but super dirty. Different gun shops will have good deals on other brands too.

What do you intend to use it for, and how often do you plan on cleaning?

Strictly range use, with cleaning after each range session: cheapest crap you want.

Primarily SD with range time to become proficient/stay proficient: little more complicated.

FWIW, I believe in cleaning after each and every range trip, effectively nullifying the idea of getting the cleanest ammo.

Occasional range time and home defense. Eventually conceal carry

I agree with Trip; it only takes 20-30 minutes to clean your gun really well. You can shoot dirty ammo, which is probably why I like white box so much.

Winchester white box has always worked well for me for practice and plinking.

Hornady Critical Defense for any self defense purposes.
