Well, every so often I become possessed by range demons and actually shoot a few rounds. And because I have yet to master the ability to shoot the 1911 without depleting the contents of the magazine it then becomes unloaded. At which time I remove it from the pistol and I reload it.

So as you say, from a technical standpoint they have not been "loaded" for 35+ years but I think your question is majoring in the minors.......

CM, I think this kid is asking about damage from long-term disuse while in a loaded state. IOW what does a long-term static load do to a mag spring.

Doesn't seem like it hurts them much from the answers so far.

think about it. you compress a spring, it returns to it's original state. same things with these magazines. unless the metal itself is deteriorating/oxidizing, why would the physical characteristics of the spring change?

they wouldn't!

Has hicap xd mags. I have 2 of the 32 round 9mm mags. They work ok, mostly as a novelty but are pretty reliable if you load them down a few rounds.

I swap out my loaded magazines every month. So they never stay loaded for too long.

Unless you mean that you take them to the range to plink, that is not necessary and may be wearing them more than just leaving them sitting loaded.

Really?! Wouldn't think that. I swap them out once a month for magazines that DO go to the range. But the mags that are left in the safe for HD get switched at least once a month.

Maybe its only a myth about springs weakening, cost makes me cautious, and a revolver guy for a defense weapon.Cocked and locked is great but.

I always keep mine loaded at about 90%. I rarely put that final round in there just to let it breathe a little bit. I cannot prove this works or doesnt work but in my mind it makes sense.

If you read enough of these ever-spawning threads about leaving mags loaded, you will notice the smart people explaining to the rest of us that springs are weakened by cycling through compression and extension, not by just sitting compressed.

I do usually load one round short for some silly reason.
