Default Full size mag work in a compact?

I have a full size XDm 45

Will those mags work in the 3.8" compact? Can you buy just the handle cover to slip on it?

Thanks for the help. I'm considering adding a XDm 3.8 compact 45 and I'm hoping the same mags will be compatible.

I think I found my own answer on the Springfield armory store. They sell handle X-tensions that can go on a full size mag.

I was surprised they were labelled 1, 2 and 3. Is that for your backstrap handle size?

Yes that is correct, or you can shoot it without the x-tension sleeve you just have a gap from the difference in length.

I believe I settled on my next gun! My next 2 are in the Springfield Armory line-up... 1) XDM 3.8" Compact 45 2)M1A Rifle 308

Another question on the X-tentions. Do they stay on/snap on pretty good and not slide off the magazine?

They slip on from the top. I don't think they would come off even if the bottom of the mag came off, they fit pretty tightly.

they stay on really well. but i dont put them on my spare mag when im ccwing my xdm 3.8 they CAN ride up makes it a little hard to slam a new mag in. the extensions are great for turning the 3.8 into a full size grip for range use but i dont use them on my spare ccw mag.

also the slides for the 5.5 and 4.5 models also work on the 3.8 frame. plug and play long as they are the same caliber

Now I just need to find one. I went out to my local gun shops and nobody had it in stock. One store said they get one about every 3 weeks, but it doesn't last long.

So, I came across a Ruger SR45 on sale for only $440 so I had to get it. Now I'm on the CA 10 day wait clock. It was on my interest list and too good of a deal to not go.

A gunshop is opening on base at the Bx in another month, so I'll go there on opening day looking for the XDm compact.

This is what I am interested in. I'm comtemplating looking for a 5.5 or 4.5 slide to put on my 3.8 .45. Longer sight radius, more velocity from longer barrel, with the concealable grip on the compact along with the option for full grip with the x-tension.
