A friend of mine has one. (Knowing what I know, preferring what I prefer...) If I was to own just one handgun, this would be very high on the list of candidates. It functions well as both a HD and medium-framed carry gun. It's an excellent gun that I may add at some point in the near future. I already have the 4.5" version of the 45acp. Handles well, plenty accurate, great ergos (for me), and an outstanding combination of quality trigger + safety (grip) design.

For $600-650 you get...
  • XDm 45acp 3.8 compact
  • 2 mags, a 9rd and a 13rd
  • A lousy magloader, ala Glock (do yourself a service and spend $30 on an Uplula)
  • Extra backstraps for a semi-custom fit
  • A very functional OWB holster
  • An okay (for the range at least) OWB mag holder

It's an excellent gun. You probably won't make use of all the "extras", but most of them are quite functional. For carry, I would buy an extra 9rd mag. That would have you carrying 19rds...9+1 in the gun, 9 in the extra mag. I generally figure if you find yourself in a situation where that ain't enough, you've probably made some really poor decisions and it's time for karma to step in kick you in the teeth.

Here is a pic of everything that comes with the XDm. I absolutely love it. One of the best guns I've ever owned. Conceals well with a IWB holster.

had one. shot good for a compact, but was extremely loud! as in very, very loud compared to my other pistols in 45. would be a good pistol for discreet carry for someone wanting a pistol in 45. all in all, not a bad pistol.

Have one. I went to buy an M&P 45C. Shot the M&P and was ready to buy. My LGS couldn't find one. So, I held the XDM. Felt better, much higher quality (and price). There was not an XDM to shoot, but I had a good feeling about it. I took a chance and bought it. Took it home, cleaned and oiled then went to the range to shoot it. From the first shot. WOW! Low recoil, more accurate than me. I love it. So glad they couldn't find the M&P.
