Hello All, I am a new member and some of you may remember me from the xdtalk forums. Anyways I am 99.9% positive I will be purchasing a springfield XD .45acp Service model for a couple of reason's, 1- it felt perfect in my hand and I like the thumb safety on it. 2- My step dad has a glock 17 (or 19) 9mm I can't remember for sure which he has had for the past ten years and bought it new. It has about 50 rounds through it and he said I can have it for $100.00 but I just wanted to get some advice on here and see what you all have to say.

Not sure about adding a poll now. Is the question 9mm glock or .45 xd? For a duty carry gun? Are you comfortable and familiar with the xd and shooting a .45? If not then go with the glock. It has a known track record of reliability and less recoil.

My glock has more recoil than my XD. Shoot them both and see what you like more.

Not sure where the question is but if you plan on purchasing a duty gun for LE you should check with the PD on which you plan to serve...they have lists of tested and approved firearms that officers may carry. Many departments do not have armorers for every possible weapon so they limit their carry weapons, many depts. also require specific calibers.

If permitted, the XD is a good choice in 9mm, 40 S&W or 45ACP. I have a 5" tactical in 40 S&W and a 45 ACP XDM...both shoot better than I can, are rock solid reliable and eat everything I feed 'em. Glocks make excellent duty weapons as well, just not my cup of tea. If your Dad is willing to give you an almost new G17 for $100 no reason not to take him up on it. Just make sure the gun is put back into 100% working order before betting your life on it.

Thanks everyone, I have not shot an xd but when I picked up the xd service model it fit perfect into my hand and I just loved it. I have shot glock before and well they are great guns there is just something missing on it that made the xd fit and feel better in my hand. Most departments around here just have a policy of "use a name brand" so it does not matter if it is glock or an xd just no High Point guns. Also I can not seem to find a range that will let me shoot an xd. In fact most of the ranges don't even return calls or emails when I asked about the guns and right now working graveyard security it is hard to find time during the day to go down to them.

Well seeing as how you may not be able to shoot the guns before you buy. And based on what you just said. I would go with the XD. They are just as reliable as a glock. And you say it fits better. Plus when your getting shot at that is a bad time to "fill like something is missing"

That XD chambered in 45 will have more recoil than that 9mm. It would check and be sure most of the guy you will be working with are not carrying the same type weapon, for cross loading and so forth and if they are not then buy whatever but if they are then you may wanna consider going with what they are using for obvious reasons. As far as reliability, there is a reason more law enforcement agencies use Glock than any other handgun so you can't go wrong with one.
