I use WWB (Winchester White Box) for the range and have a few loaded mags at home with Critical Defense ammo. All in 9mm.

"best ammo" would be based on your opinion of it and if your gun likes it. Everyone will tell you what they prefer, but its best for you to figure what works better for you.

Example: me and a buddy went to a range one day with exact same ammo Winchester White box .45acp 230g FMJ. Both of us were shooting Kimber 1911s. His model was a Pro Carry, mine a Combat Carry.
I had a bunch of FTE/FTF. His ran flawless.

almost Every gun is picky about what it likes to eat.

Use FMJ if you plan to shoot thru a closed door.
Use JHP if you plan to shoot thru an open door.

With the price of ammo through the roof I don't think I would do high volume practice with self defense ammo. For practice I really like the Federal Champion ammo at Wal-Mart. It feeds flawlessly and I have yet to have a problem with it.

I also like the Winchester white box, its packed just a little hotter than the federal, so it is probably more closely matching the self defense stuff.

For the SD, I like Speer gold dot JHP's

Ive been using Remington Golden Sabers for both. I can get them for a great price from a shop near by and they are cheaper them win white box at wally world. If they ever stop the deal or run out then its back to whatever ball ammo i can get for practice and the Golden Sabers will be defense ammo only.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments. I use at this point WWB from Wal-Mart, that seems to be a common theme.

For both target practice and home defense I use PMC fmj. Cheap, potent, and practical.

I was at the range a couple weeks ago with my xd9sc and "rapped" off 200 rds of the Winchester white box 115gr....out of all 200 rds, I had two shells that didn't eject completely....both from the same box. I could tell they were weak loads by the sound of the discharge.....anywho, Im not bashing Winchester ammo by any means, but I actually prefer federal

Range FMJs: WWB or Fed Champion. I greatly prefer the "packed like sardines" 100rd boxes. And I generally steer clear of Remington UMC.

Defense JHPs: It's all personal preference. My preference is 50rd boxes of Winchester Rangers, which can be found for under $30 online.
