Default target question

So I'm wanting one of those gong style hanging targets, but everything I find seems to be specified for rifles. Why couldnt I shoot a handgun at it though?

The link below is for one of these that includes handguns in the description, but it says a minimum distance of 100 yrds. Who shoots a handgun at 100 yrds? They must be referring to rifle distance, right? Do you think I'd be fine using this thing with my pistols at a distance of 10+ yrds?

Just seeking opinions. Thanks guys.

The discription says 100 yards w/ a max velocity of 3000fps.
This is cheaper and what you are looking for.

Yeah, but the 100yrds is in reference to rifle fire. I'm more than confident that 10yrds or further with any cal handgun is more than sufficient.

Most handguns come no where close to 3000fps, so yes you would be fine. That rig is way over priced though. I would suggest lead bullets if you are shooting 10 yards.

If u can weld I'd make one. The target in your link doesn't look like it can stand up to rifles.. And it's made with 20 bucks worth of metal.. I made a swinger with 3/8" plate for the target and my ak dented it so bad it almost punched thru. And as long as the target of can swing its safe to say u can shoot it very close and not have to worry about a ricochet.

Hitchcock45 on YouTube has one at 100 or more yds and shoots it often - check it out.

Problem: I'm sure a good one will be heavy & expensive.

I believe I heard Hickock45 say once his gong is at 83 yards. And he regularly nails it with pistols. Love to hear him say "Let's go gong huntin'."

I have a bunch of steel gong and silhouette targets from gongshot.com . I buy only the AR500 hardness steel and it holds up great against .223, 7.62x39 and .308 . I shoot a min of 100yds with rifle. I set up the same targets at 15 yards for handgun work. I have put literally thousands of rounds on the targets and hardly seen any marks. A few small pits but nothing significant. There is nothing as satisfying during a range session and the music from the gongs.

For more fun type practice I picked up a dueling tree from metal spinning targets, In this case I got the magnum type, which is rated AR400 hardness. This works great for .38 and bigger calibers. I got a second set of paddles for .22 which are a much thinner steel but swing fine with the .22.

In both cases I was pleased with the quality and durability of the targets. Both places shipped quick and for a reasonable price.

I am not affiliated with either place mentioned. Just a pleased customer.

You hit that steel just right, that bullet is coming right back at ya. I shoot hanging pots and pans so the bullet goes through, and still get the dong.
