Shooting A36 Steel

Not sure where to put this category wise but accessories section seems likely.

I built a 36"x36" A-frame stand for hanging steel plates to shoot. I will attach the steel plates with short chain lengths. I plan to buy steel plates from www.shootsteel.com in the future but until then I am on a spending freeze from the wife. The A-frame is a copy of what they sell for $150 shipped.

I have a weld shop next to my machine shop and they have a bunch of welded together steel in the scrap bin. I was thinking about grabbing a few and making due. I would be shooting from 10-25 yards with lead loads from 9mm, .38, .44 and .45ACP loads. The steel is 3/8". Would this be safe and will the steel hold up or will the bullets punch through?

I will have to look at my reciept to see what steel I used. It was either A30 or A36, but 1/2" thick holds up to a .45 not a 30-06!!!:(

Just check and the steel I used is A36. I know for sure 1/2" handles it, but I haven't shot at my 3/8" yet.;)
