They are both battery powered. If the battery on the red dot fails you are screwed unless you have a firearm with immediate access back up sights. If the laser quits you still have your irons. Lasers are also good training aids but dont get dependent on them. They can help you smooth out your trigger pull.

A laser also shows exactly where you are.
