What is the difference between the Infra Red night vision and the other type of night vision that uses heat? Does one require special chemicals to function? Can you get thermal vision devices for public use? What is the cost difference between the two?

IR uses a beam of light to see by (active type), Some thermal just picks up the heat signature (passive) and NOD's use passive collections of any type of light.
This is basic, you will find hybrids and some special other types.

I have an IR Israely surplus that needs a # 1 battery to work, anybody knows where I can get the battery to put my IR back in business?

night vision is just what you called it thermal imaging is totaly diffrent dawg as it works off a persons or things heat signature and costs about a hundred times more. you can get a nvrs for as low as 400 bucks thermal starts around 10k do the math. what are you looking for it to do for you.

As Dwarren said- IR goes back to late WW II, uses an IR light source to illuminate target. Also means YOU can be seen by anyone else with an IR scope. Light Amplification (Vietnam era Starlight scope) amplifies existing light, like moonlight, starlight, etc. Useless in a place with no light (tunnel). Passive IR or Thermal Imaging- picks up infrared light given off from targets- body heat, engine heat, etc. Watch the TV night pursuits with a helicopter using FLIR- Forward Looking Infrared. Hot things look bright.
