Making steel targets
I'm thinking about making my own steel targets. I can weld and cut the steel at work. My problem is finding the steel. Where do you buy the steel and what grade? Hopefully someone here knows and thanks!!!:)

try some welding and fabrication shops or steel suppliers in your area.

Made some rifle spinners. For the strike surface I used 1/2 thick steel I cut a circle out of an used slope mower blade. Have shot it with .270wsm, 308, 30-06, 223, ect.

Your cheapest bet would be a steel supply warehouse. Like a Ryerson. They will tell you what gauge to get. They will try to sell you a 4'x8' piece, and it will be fairly pricey. If you go to local fabricators they may have scrap pieces to sell you. I would get at least 1/2"

Use AR500 steel for centerfire handgun and rifle targets. You can use 3/8" for non-magnum handgun and 1/2" for magnum handgun and rifle targets. For .22 rimfire, you can use 1/4" or 5/16" mild steel for your targets.

I stopped Ar a RR crossing where they were working on tracks and they let me have a few of these plates they work great even a 223 @ 50 yds. Barelly penetrate At 100 the bullet shatters and the steel and makes a beautiful response. I hung mine from chains and uses bolts to attach to metal fence posts . Just make sure you angle them correctly

Thanks for all the ideas. I called one of our suppliers and they told me about a steel company. I picked up some 1/2" scrap plates so far and going back for some 3/8" plates on Monday. Me and my cousin are going to be making it. I'll send pics once it is done.
