I'd recommend the racks rather than laying the guns flat. Unless they're stainless, I always worry that they'll trap and attract moisture and rust on the side that it lays on. I guess I've just got too many blued safe queens, but a $15 rack gives me peace of mind and might mean the difference in ruining the bluing on a $1500 pistol. It's a no-brainer to me.

I wouldn't think so. There is a fire reactive seal on the one I picked up. It seals the door when heat builds up. I would expect it to leak like a sieve otherwise.
