laser color (on the ones that project the laser) does it make a difference?

Yes. Different colors in the spectrum can be seen further and better in certain atmospheric conditions. Red is the standard, but Green is the next up and coming color everyone wants to get their hands on because it can be seen much further and it can be used in daylight conditions.
