I just received my Evil Roy Steel Target from Action Targets. I spent the extra money and for the AR550 12" Circle steel head. I can't wait to get to the range and shoot it.
My question is about shooting an Ar15 at the steel. I payed extra for the AR550 steel head thinking I could shoot a .223 rifle at it. It recommends to shoot rounds that have less than 3000 fps, which .223 does not.
Anyone have an Evil Roy? If so, do you shoot .223 at it? If you do, what distance do you shoot it at? And have you noticed any damage?

A lot of .223 rounds go sub-3000 ft/second. The larger the round, the slower it will go. Thus, 55gr bullets will pretty easily break that 3000 ft/sec speed, but 69gr bullets probably won't and 62gr bullets might not.
Are you shooting a carbine or mid/rifle? A 16" barrel makes it even greater chance you are shooting below that velocity.
I assume you don't have a chrono? I don't...

No Chrono. 
Most of the stuff I have stockpiled is 55gr.
I'd be shooting it out of a 16" Middy AR.
What distance should be safe to shoot from without damaging the steel?

Wow, you are really playing with 3000 ft/sec! You aren't going to blow up the thing... Just set it at 100 yards, shoot it a few times, and see what happens. You'll probably just see that tell-tale sunburst pattern of the lead without any damage. If you do see a pockmark, just know that you need to go a little farther out.
Repeat the process at 150-200 yards.
The goal is to have fun, right? Eventually the target will be toasted. The only question is how long you want it to last.

Cool I just got me a few steel targets myself! Got a couple 1/2" AR500 for my AR too. Got mine from shootsteel.com though but I did buy a self healing target from Action Targets. Happy shooting!

As long as possible. I know there are gun nuts on this forum that know they safe distance to shoot without damaging the steel, with a 16" Middy firing 55gr .223 ammo. Was hoping someone into the ballistics chimed in.

Here's a vid on AR-15/AK damage to different grade steel targets. I believe they are shooting 55g out of a 14.5 barrel
