I love reading all of the responses that everyone has provided to this question...many excellent thoughts and observations, and I agree with pretty much everything that has been stated.

The one thing that no one has mentioned, however, and that has always been a factor for me is that the 1911 - even the most modest, blued, Goverment piece, is a BEAUTIFUL instrument. From an aesthetic standpoint, I have always thought that it is an unmatched example of industrial design: sleek lines, perfect balance to the eye and in the hand.

Simply put, Pistol = m1911.

It's completely no frill, all utility. Yet, somehow, there is a beauty to it.

The better sight radius more than makes up for the loss of the extra inch of barrel.
