In this case M stands for model. M-16, M1911, M92.

Some more:
M & P from S&W means military and police

M (i.e. MP5) in the Bundeswehr (German army) means machine-pistole (sub-machine gun)

AR- Armalite rifle

Us in the gun world love ourselves some acronyms.

Think of an M1911 as a 1911 based off the original as designed 100 years ago. The new doodads and geegaws, not so much, but that still wouldn't be wrong (exactly), such as the Sig nightmare 1911. It's a 1911 STYLE, but not really an M1911, but the JMB history police aren't going to lynch anyone, so it's no real biggie.
