The four companies I had in mind were Kimber, Sig Sauer, Springfield Armory, and Colt so it looks like I'm on track. I just looked up those and came away with 4 I like most. But I haven't looked at Colt yet.
1. Kimber Raptor II
2. Sig Stainless Rail Gun
3. SA Range Officer
4. SA Loaded

Kimber is a nice gun. They just seem to be over priced for what they are with bad customer service and a 1 year warranty. Having said that, my dad has carried the same one for years, zero issues and accurate. YMMV

What part of Cali are you in?

If you are close enough, there are a few shops that will do a SSE for you, so you can get the model you want. There will be consequences tho........
You'll have to wait a few for it, and you will have to pay a premium for it. About $200 more.....

I just bought my first 1911 for Christmas this week!! I got a remington r1. Mine is parkerized but they make a stainless version. MSRP is around $750 so its well within your price range.

I my opinion, standard companies hands down on quality for your money are Kimber, Springfield, and Sig Sauer... That being said, take a look at the Dan Wesson V-Bob... It's definitely my next buy for a 1911.

If you can buy Colt, buy Colt. If not try Nighthawk.
