I recommend electronic hearing protection so that you can hear what's going on around you etc. I use disposable plugs because I can't afford electronic ear pro.

I've been happy with my Howard Leight Impact Sport earmuffs, but I also use disposable foam plugs when shooting at my local indoor range. If shooting a match outdoors I just use the muffs and they are fine. Slim design makes them easy to keep with my other gear in my range bag. They run about $50.

I use Peltor - Tactical Pro. I like them better than other electronics I tried. A bit of cost but after 40 yrs. I thought I deserved it. I can hear RO's and my students, but the shots are muted a lot. Peltor has good non electronic too.

I use Howard Leight R-01526 Impact Sport Electronic Earmuff. They are available from Amazon for under $50. Good amplification. I can hear much better with these earphones than without. Like a very ugly hearing aid. Highly recommend them.

If you wanna get fancy, the electronic ones are fun...they take a little getting used to though, and can be a tad pricy...

I've had to wear hearing protection in every job I've had (tree service, steel fab, drilling and blasting...crazy rock drummer...:p) so I'm used to it but the yellow foamies are great, they've saved my hearing tremendously over the years, easy to carry, re-usable, cheap...

Use what is most comfortable to you, in the ear, over the ear, just as long as you have something on, you'll be fine...
