I really like things made in the "jungle". Do you suspect these frames are made in the tropics because of the fine craftsmanship that is found there?

So you don't like "jungle" made items. Ok, I see you have driken the kook aid. No further discussion needed.

There is only ONE company that makes a genuine Colt 1911, the rest are only 1911s, but ARE still 1911s IMO.

I'd rather have a Wilson Combat or an Ed Brown 1911 than a Colt. (though, I would definitely NOT turn down a Colt)

Then their are those of us with Kimbers that haven't suffered the CS and other reported issues that trust and swear by them..
There are lots of great 1911's from lots of manufactures.. I personally believe to limit oneself on others opinions, one time/one gun/product experience is short sited..

For example I bought a brand new Ruger P345 and had several light strikes with different types of ammo, then after shooting some +P rounds that the manual said was ok, the pistol felt lose like it was going to come apart in my hand.. I did sell the gun and informed my buddy before buying it.. If based my opinion on Rugers based on this exp and a few other experiences with friends Rugers(which I didn't care for) would be ignorant..
Point is the Colt design is long lasting and classic but there are MANY 1911's that preform as well or better and just as many that look better IMO.. Colt is a cult figure because of the govt models.. Had Springfield made the govt issued guns and or designed the the original this would be a completely different discussion.. Personally a Wilson Combat or other high grade 1911 is higher on my list then a Colt, save for a govt issued gun..

I've got no issue with Colt, but there are equal and better 1911's.. Closed minded and short sited comes to mind.. Others didn't invent the wheel, only made it roll better.
my statement was simply that all the others are a copy of the 1911. Colt is the original. that doesn't mean the copies are inferior by any means, but they are still copies. Nighthawk Custom makes some of the nicest looking and performing 1911's there are, but they are a copy and even exceed Colt 1911's in some ways.

i was not trying to infer that the copies were inferior or less than worthy than a Colt, but just simply they have copied the basic design and principal operation of the Colt.

personally, i own three copies, a Remington R1, an AC Commander, and a SA Micro Compact 45. i am very pleased with them and don't find them inferior to a Colt. but i also realize they are not Colts either.

please explain that statement and tell us why Colt is the best. simply saying so without quantifying your answer doesn't give your answer any credibility.

and please in your own words, not those of others. but why you think it's the best.

Colt is the original 1911, there is nothing better than the original, in my opinion.

then please explain the difference in a Nighthawk Custom, or a Les Baer, or a tricked out Wilson Combat. have you ever held one of these and compared them to a Colt? i have. how about some of the truly hand built custom one-off 1911's? ever had one of those in your hands and compared it to a Colt? i have.

there is a difference that can be seen and felt, but just because it says Colt doesn't automatically make it superior to other 1911's.

being the original doesn't always make it the best, just the original. being a Colt, does add to it's value, to the point that it's an original and will pretty much gaurantee it's value in the future.

IMO the answer to the original question is that there is no correct answer. I have been shopping for a 1911 Commander for a few months. Lots of research, amd lurking on this site. Depending on your budget there are probably at least a dozen really good guns out there. I'd really like a Nighthawk, Wilson Combat or something truly custom at some point, but 'settled' on the Colt Wiley Clapp Commander.
