Default Take down pin assembly

I've been trying to figure out the best way to reassemble my SA 1911.
I've read that using a tool to push the plunger in when seating the takedown pin is the way to go to prevent the crescent mark of shame.

I have used a jeweler's flat scredriiver, but with a little slip I could make a mark worse than the scratch from sliding the pin. Is there something that works better? What do y'all use? By the way, I bought mine used with the idiot mark already there. I just don't want to make it worse. I used some 000 steel wool to see if I could make it come out, and it worked a little. Going to have to get some polish. Thanks.

Put your 1911 on the edge of a sturdy table. Put your left palm on the grip and the thumb and first finger of the left hand on the slide stop pin. Align the slide take down notch and the slide stop. Use a small brass punch or similar hard plastic rod in your right hand and reach in from the ejection port at about a 45* angle, press/pull the slide stop plunger pin toward yourself. The slide stop can be carefully pressed into place.

Brass or Copper should be soft enough to not cause any scratches, hard plastic like Nylon or Delrin will not scratch.

If needed you can file a small flat spot or square up the end of the punch to engage the plunger pin.

Isn't that the "idiot" mark the previous owner put on before you bought it?

It's a slide stop.

Get her dirty, then clean her so she starts to respect you. When her trust is complete, she will serve you well for a lifetime!

As stated in the original post. It was there when I got it!
